Andalusian ease and quietly glamorous heritage on Marbella’s Golden Mile, unchanged in spirit for seventy years.

The place

Marbella Club’s story began long before the Costa del Sol became synonymous with Mediterranean glamour. In 1946, Prince Maximilian von Hohenlohe travelled south from Madrid to visit his cousin. Finding him out fishing, he spent the afternoon beneath the pines of a secluded coastal finca. The setting stayed with him. A year later, his son Alfonso returned to acquire the estate, Santa Margarita, and began welcoming friends and family to what would become one of Europe’s most celebrated seaside retreats.

When Marbella Club opened in 1954, it had just 20 rooms. Royalty, artists and screen legends soon followed, drawn by a place that offered something rather different from the grand hotels of the era: informality, discretion and an effortless sense of occasion.

That spirit remains its defining quality. Whitewashed buildings and terracotta roofs nestle beneath towering pines, banana palms and cascading bougainvillea, while winding garden paths lead towards the beach. There is no grand architectural gesture, no need for one. Instead, the hotel unfolds like a private Andalusian village, with the Mediterranean always close and a reassuring sense that life here moves at its own pace.

The story continues at Finca Ana María, a 12-acre botanical sanctuary once belonging to the von Bismarck family. Developed over five years in collaboration with Prince Louis Albert de Broglie and the Parisian house of Deyrolle, its ten gardens are a world of their own. An acacia maze, a cabinet of curiosities, a storytelling tree and a mandala-shaped kitchen garden sit among more than 300 varieties of fruit and vegetables, including around 100 heritage tomatoes. There is an adults-only pool and a padel court at the top of the estate, but the real pleasure is simply to wander. Allow an hour and you may find yourself staying all afternoon.

Dining

With ten restaurants and bars, dining at Marbella Club is as much about atmosphere as it is about what arrives at the table. Evenings belong to The Grill, an intimate, candlelit restaurant in the hotel’s oldest building, where chateaubriand is carved tableside and slow-cooked suckling lamb honours a tradition stretching back decades.

By day, the mood is more relaxed. El Patio, shaded by jasmine, is made for leisurely meals, while MC Beach and the Beach Club draw guests towards the water for grilled fish, sushi and long lunches overlooking the Mediterranean.

At Finca Ana María, El Olivar takes a more seasonal approach. Chef Andrés Ruiz shapes the menu each morning around the garden’s harvest, creating a dining experience for resident guests aged 16 and over that feels closely connected to its surroundings. In high summer, the Tomato Experience offers a guided walk through the heritage beds followed by a tasting menu celebrating their produce.

Later, Rudi’s piano bar brings the evening to a gentle crescendo, with champagne, tapas and live music in honour of the hotel’s legendary host, Count Rudi von Schönburg. During summer, the gathering moves outdoors to the Summer Bar, tucked among orange trees. La Bodega, meanwhile, is reserved for private tastings.

Wellness

Wellbeing at Marbella Club feels less like a programme and more like a natural extension of the setting. Directly beside the beach, the 800-square-metre Thalasso Spa has 11 treatment rooms and a heated seawater pool, with the Mediterranean providing an appropriately close connection to the source.

For a more contemplative approach, the Holistic Studio hosts Tibetan singing bowl meditations, cacao ceremonies and sessions with visiting practitioners. At Finca Ana María, the Herbal Spa offers half- and full-day retreats combining botanical rituals, yoga and workshops, with lunch prepared from the garden’s seasonal produce.

There is also an ice bath and a sauna cabin designed for two, for those who prefer their restoration with a little contrast.

Guests staying in the villas can bring the experience home, too. The wellness team can create a bespoke private retreat for families or groups, with treatments and sessions arranged within the privacy of their own accommodation.

Families

Marbella Club has long understood that a truly relaxing family holiday leaves room for everyone to do their own thing. Its year-round Kids Club occupies 5,000 square metres of garden, giving younger guests an expansive world to explore while parents settle into the pleasures of a long lunch or an unhurried afternoon.

Among its more distinctive features is the miniature Seahorse Hotel, which children are free to run themselves. Babysitting is also available, and selected villas are conveniently close to the club. The result is a hotel where family life feels easy, rather than carefully choreographed.

Sport and the outdoors

Marbella Club has a particular place in the history of padel in Spain. Alfonso von Hohenlohe introduced the game to the country after encountering it in Mexico in the 1970s, and a restored court at Finca Ana María keeps that legacy alive. Private lessons are available for those keen to try it.

Away from the coast, the hotel’s own 18-hole golf course lies in the Benahavís hills, around 20 minutes inland. Designed by Dave Thomas, it offers a quieter alternative to the busier courses along the coast. The nearby Marbella Club Equestrian Centre adds another dimension, hosting rounds of the Spanish show-jumping circuit.

For days spent on the water or exploring the surrounding area, bicycle hire and water sports complete the offering.

The villas

For those who value space and privacy above all else, the villas offer a compelling alternative to the hotel’s rooms and suites. Set within the gardens, they combine the independence of a private residence with access to the full range of hotel services.

The Grand Villas are the standout choice, each with its own entrance, flower-filled garden, heated swimming pool and dedicated Villa Host. Accommodation ranges from three-bedroom Andalusian houses tucked among the palms to Villa del Mar, a six-bedroom estate directly on the beach.

The appeal is not simply the extra space. It is the freedom to settle into a home of your own, with family and friends gathered around the pool and every detail taken care of discreetly in the background. For multi-generational stays or longer gatherings, it is a particularly appealing way to experience Marbella Club.

Why we love it

There are few places on the Mediterranean that have held on to their identity quite so convincingly. Marbella Club has evolved over seven decades, yet its appeal remains rooted in the same simple pleasures: generous gardens, warm hospitality, excellent food and a welcome absence of formality.

It is a place where a morning can begin with a swim in the sea, drift into lunch beneath the trees and end with champagne in the piano bar, without any of it feeling like an occasion that needs arranging. Children find their own adventures; villa guests retreat into their private gardens; couples can disappear into the spa or linger over dinner.

Marbella’s old town and Puerto Banús are close at hand when the mood takes you. But the particular pleasure of Marbella Club is that there is rarely any need to go elsewhere.
