The Lodge at Spindrift
The Lodge at Spindrift stands at the edge of the cliffs in the Carmel Highlands, where the Monterey coast turns wild and the Pacific breaks on the rocks below. Screen audiences know it already: the house was Sharon Stone's oceanfront retreat in Basic Instinct and appeared again in HBO's Big Little Lies, and it has been featured in Architectural Digest.
The California Modern estate covers more than 12,000 square feet on around two acres of coastal gardens. On the main level, a chef's kitchen and glassed breakfast atrium sit alongside formal living and dining rooms, the principal suite, two guest suites and a two-storey library lined with rare books. Below, a family room, gym, guest suite and a second kitchen open onto the pool and hot tub.
At the top of the house, a further suite looks out over Point Lobos and Wildcat Cove, a view that shifts with every change of light and fog. Six bedrooms in all sleep twelve.
Outside, winding paths lead through coastal planting, past a Japanese Zen garden and koi pond, to a private fire pit right above the ocean. With a steam room, sauna, three hot tubs and an ocean-view gym, the house is as restorative as its setting, and Carmel-by-the-Sea and Big Sur are both a short drive along Highway 1.
