The Chef’s Kitchen:

The Chef’s Kitchen is located in the south of the house, and at almost 1,000 square feet, it houses two double wide Subzero Refrigerators, a 1,250 bottle well stocked wine refrigerator, a Ten (10) Burner Gaggenau™ Stove top which is also replete with two self-contained Vegetable Steamers, two deep fry units and two electric grills. In addition there are three Wolf™ ovens and a Wolf™ microwave and if you like pizza there is a standalone kiln and Brick pizza oven. The kitchen also has two adjoining wings; a breakfast atrium room and self-service coffee and espresso bar and an adjoining Scullery and food preparation room replete with two double wide stainless steel commercial sinks, two Miele dishwashers, and an ice machine.

Adjacent to the Chef’s Kitchen there is also an informal octagonal glass dining area that seats eight and boast some of the best ocean views from the entire house, and a formal dining room (complete with fine China and Silverware) which can seat ten and be used for board meetings or fine dining experiences.

The Downstairs Kitchen:

Right off of the doors to the pool is a fully-equipped, open-plan kitchen featuring a stovetop, grill, large fridge/freezer, oven, microwave and a soda & sundae bar. This is an ideal social space for smaller parties and the perfect setting for families to collect on a hot days spent by the pool.

Gardens & Landscaping

An already awe-inspiring natural landscape has been enhanced with several pounds of mossy boulders and large floating flagstone steps, a beautiful Japanese zen garden, gracious footpaths and lighting, and a variety of garden plants, ferns, succulents, and grasses. Strategically placed viewing benches are interspersed among the garden paths and coastal trails to remind the observer, to live in the moment and a take it in the beauty of their surroundings.

In the fun mixture of micro climates, one will find large stands of rare native white succulents (Dudleya farinosa), native (Limonium) sea lavender, and various sedums along the coast; several salt-tolerant flowering species such as Hebe’s and Ceanothus; and a manicured garden with waterscapes and a Koi pond surrounding the entry. There is also a small greenhouse where orchids and other beautiful plants are grown and displayed.

Spa & Fitness

The property features an aromatic steam room, a full dry sauna, a pool, three hot tubs, and several beautiful water features and walking paths to promote serenity. In these facilities the minutes tend to melt away as one’s attention is fully mesmerized by motion of the ocean upon the shores of Point Lobos State Reserve Sanctuary.

The fitness facilities have also been very recently upgraded. This is not a typical in-home gym, this is an ultra-inviting workout space that is thoroughly equipped with weights, yoga mats and stretching aids, as well as commercial grade equipment including; Precor™ elliptical machines, a Stairmaster™, recumbent bikes, treadmills, rowing machines, and a Power Plate (ft. PrecisionWave™ Technology). The space also incorporates the latest high definition smart TVs and video facilities for those that like to watch sports, news, tv shows or movies when they are working up a sweat. Fitness Facilities are strategically located in a an area which has 180° ocean views of Point Lobos State Reserve.

Library

Without a doubt, one of the most inviting nooks within the overall estate is the Library and adjoining reading room. This double story Art Deco architectural masterpiece is replete with built-in oak bookshelves, a custom wrought iron-rail spiral staircase, and a silver-and-gold-leaf domed ceiling depicting a mural of Johannes Kepler’s “Laws of Planetary Motion.”

Here wisdom may blossom in the quiet rapture of a book or a powerful telescope looking deep into the reaches of the expanding Cosmos. Or perhaps, it may simply provide a moment where time stills, as many know there is no greater recipe for tranquility than settling in with a good book in a comfortable time worn chair.

The library is stocked with a vast collection of both popular reading materials and a rare book collection, costing more than $2.5 million dollars to bring to fruition. It has housed one of the greatest collections of historic archives and manuscripts covering worldwide exploration, a theme of previous owner Steve Fossett.

Fossett was a record-setting adventurer and explorer who at one time held hundreds of World records in numerous disciplines. He was friends with Richard Branson, whose Virgin Group sponsored a number of Fossett’s sailing and aviation attempts. He was the first person to complete a solo circumnavigation of the Earth in a hot air balloon. He also swam the English Channel and climbed some of the highest mountains on Earth. Fossett was a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and a member of the Explorers Club.

Quite the curator, his library shelves featured significant works in the fields of aeronautics, Arctic and Antarctic exploration, circumnavigation and mountaineering. There were important manuscripts and archives of some of the most notable figures in the field of exploration, including Captain James Cook, Charles Darwin, Sir Francis Drake, Alexander von Humboldt, Lewis and Clark, William Schouten and Ernest Shackleton. Highlights include a copy of Barthelemi Faujas de Saint-Fond’s Description des Experiences de la Machine Aerostatique de MM. de Montgolfier, which describes the first manned flight, and a copy of Aurora Australis, the first book printed in Antarctica by Shackleton and his team and a first collected edition of Sir Francis Drake’s voyages and a copy of the first edition of Leo Africanus’ A Geographical Historie of Africa. In summary, an extraordinary reading room filled with extraordinary books by an extraordinary man.
