Carbon Beach
This striking beach house sits on Carbon Beach, the Malibu stretch of sand nicknamed "Billionaire's Beach". It was designed by Olson Kundig, the celebrated American practice behind some of the country's most admired private homes, and it pairs industrial concrete, black steel and glass with warm wood ceilings and natural textures.
Step through the bold orange front door and a signature Olson Kundig staircase of steel, glass and leather rises against raw concrete walls. At the centre of the main floor is a cactus-filled courtyard, around which the open living room and kitchen are arranged. Retractable walls of glass open to the Pacific, and a sweeping wraparound deck with an outdoor fireplace leads straight down to the sand.
Five bedrooms sleep up to ten guests. The primary suite has two bathrooms, one with a freestanding tub and ocean views, and a private terrace with a concrete fireplace. Throughout the house, vintage design pieces sit alongside contemporary works from leading Los Angeles galleries, including artists such as Mickalene Thomas and Nick Cave.
For downtime there is a gym, a cinema room with a 100-inch screen, a games room and a book-lined office. A private chef, fitness sessions and sunset yoga can be arranged, and Nobu, Malibu Farm and the Little Beach House are minutes away.
