Villa Sola Cabiati
Villa Sola Cabiati stands on the shore of Lake Como at Tremezzo, a short walk from the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, with whose service it is run. Its history reaches back to the early 16th century, and for generations it has belonged to the Dukes of Serbelloni, who used it as their summer retreat.
The villa's most famous chapter came in the late 18th century, when Duke Gian Galeazzo Serbelloni, known as the "republican duke", welcomed Napoleon to Milan and later escorted Joséphine to the city. The couple's marital bed is still in the house today, one of many treasures in what feels like a living museum.
Inside, the neoclassical rooms are breathtaking. Frescoes in the style of the Tiepolo school, terrazzo floors, handmade Murano chandeliers, tapestries, paintings and majolica fill the decorative halls, the formal dining room and the Sala degli Stucchi. Six suites, each with its own bedroom, bathroom and living area and each decorated differently, sleep twelve guests.
Outside, an Italian garden of arabesque flower beds and centuries-old trees frames the lake, with a pool set within the park. A private jetty welcomes guests arriving by vintage Riva from the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, and a full staff, including a butler, housekeeper, chambermaid and private chef, look after every detail.
