Villa Hortensia
Villa Hortensia stands among the pines of Čikat Bay on the island of Lošinj, in Croatia's Kvarner Gulf. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Lošinj's clean air and mild climate drew the aristocracy of Austria-Hungary, who built elegant summer villas along this bay, and Hortensia is one of the villas that survive from that Belle Époque era.
Now part of the historic villas of the Boutique Hotel Alhambra, the house has been fully renovated, blending its traditional architecture with contemporary design. Interiors mix marble and Murano glass with an open, airy layout, with lighting designed by Croatian lighting designer Dean Skira.
Ten en-suite bedrooms, each looking out over the sea or the pine forest, sleep up to twenty guests, many with marble bathrooms, soaking tubs and private terraces. Shared spaces include a living room with bar, a dining room opening onto the terrace, a private cinema and a wellness area with Finnish sauna and fitness studio.
The garden leads down to a heated seawater pool with whirlpool, an outdoor massage area and a private bathing deck on the bay, where sunset dinners can be arranged. Stays are full board, with meals by a private chef, Croatian wines, daily housekeeping and airport transfers, as well as access to the Alhambra's Michelin-starred restaurant, wellness centre and beach club.
