Villa Avellana
Villa Avellana rises from a steep hillside above the Pacific on Peninsula Papagayo, in Costa Rica's Guanacaste province. Designed by SARCO Architects and completed in 2023, it was named Best Single Residence Architecture in the Americas at the International Property Awards, a modern tropical house that cantilevers out towards the beach.
The estate covers around three private acres and some 33,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. Split-level social areas flow between the jungle and the sea, finished in Italian porcelain, certified teak and stone from local quarries. Ten en-suite bedrooms, each with a private balcony and six with ocean views, sleep up to 23 guests.
At its heart is an 82-foot lap pool with a shaded wet lounge, a twelve-person jacuzzi and a bar. A one-acre private park with a bocce court can host events, and a treehouse is used for wellness classes alongside open-air massage rooms, a hidden meditation area and a hilltop yoga deck.
The feel is that of a family home run like a five-star boutique hotel. A team of twenty includes a chef cooking Costa Rican and international dishes with local, organic produce, and all food and drink is included. A 42-foot Boston Whaler is on hand for days on the water, golf carts make it easy to get around, and guests have access to The Club at Peninsula Papagayo.
