Dux Palma
Villa Dux is a piece of Palma's history. Known locally as the General's House, it was built as a summer residence for the family of General Jaime Garau, a Mallorcan army officer who served for a time in Cuba, and remodelled in 1922. Its style is that of a casa indiana, the colonial-inspired houses built by Mallorcans returning from the Americas, here with an Art Deco twist, a central tower and a grand balcony.
After years standing empty, the house was rescued and lovingly restored by its architect owners, using traditional lime plasters and preserving the marble entrance stairs, patterned tile floors, frescoes and high ceilings. Mid-century furniture now sits alongside antiques from other eras, and underfloor heating has been discreetly added beneath the old floors.
Eight en-suite bedrooms sleep up to 16 guests. The kitchen is made for entertaining, with a formal dining room for 16, and there is a living room with a fireplace and a home cinema.
Outside, a heated lap pool with underwater music sits within a terraced garden of palms and fruit trees, where tortoises roam. An outdoor kitchen and a dining table for 20 sit in the shade of pines and olive trees, and the tower terrace has wide views over the city. Palma's old town and cathedral are about ten minutes away, as are the nearest beaches, and the airport is about 15 minutes by car.
