Oliver Messel’s genius was to merge the divisions between the outdoors and indoors, ushering in a more modern style of Caribbean architecture. His utilised perspective to make rooms appear larger, with windows and doors carefully positioned to ‘frame’ perfect views. His use of slender Greek columns, flattened arches, elaborate plaster mouldings, latticework, jalousied wooden shutters and overgrown jungle-like gardens all combined into his ‘Gingerbread’ style. Another trademark was to have the front door open to look straight through the house to the view beyond. His homes still awe and inspire guests to this day.

Obsidian, Mustique
With no original surviving buildings on Mustique, Messel was given freedom to conceive a style all of his own. It is best-seen in photographer Patrick Lichfield’s former home Obsidian.
