Oliver Messel’s genius was to merge the divisions between the outdoors and indoors, ushering in a more modern style of Caribbean architecture. His utilised perspective to make rooms appear larger, with windows and doors carefully positioned to ‘frame’ perfect views. His use of slender Greek columns, flattened arches, elaborate plaster mouldings, latticework, jalousied wooden shutters and overgrown jungle-like gardens all combined into his ‘Gingerbread’ style.
